An introduction to sensors

A sensor in innius collects data.

You can configure four types of sensors in innius:

  • Physical sensors
  • Virtual sensors
  • Manual sensors
  • Time-based sensors

A physical sensor is an actual sensor or datapoint within your machine, which provides raw data to innius. The many different types of physical sensors are all supported by innius. You can read how to configure a physcial sensor here.

A virtual sensor allows you to process and manipulate data from other sensors to suit your needs. At least one sensor, of any type, needs to be used to provide data for a virtual sensor, via a script. For example: calculating an average temperature based on a number of physical temperature sensors in your machine. You can read how to configure a virtual sensor here.

A manual sensor is used for manual input of data if the required sensor is not installed on your machine. Therefore you can use the innius Operations app to enter data for the defined manual sensors. You can read how to configure a manual sensor here.

A time-based sensor creates data based on a defined schedule. You can read how to configure a time-based sensor here.

Defining sensors and scripts occurs in the innius Admin app, and the viewing of sensors takes place in the innius Insight app or the innius Dashboard app.
